She said I love you but I know this other woman loves you and would love to spend some time with you. The other woman that my wife wanted me to visit was my MOTHER, who has been a widow for 19 years, but the demands of my work and my three children had made it possible to visit her only occasionally.

That night I called to invite her to go out for dinner and a movie.

"What's wrong, are you well," she asked? My mother is the type of woman who suspects that a late night call or a surprise invitation is a sign of bad news.

"I thought that it would be pleasant to be with you," I responded. "Just the two of us."

She thought about it for a moment, and then said, "I would like that very much."

That Friday after work, as I drove over to pick her up I was a bit nervous. When I arrived at her house, I noticed that she, too, seemed to be nervous about our date. She waited in the door with her coat on. She had curled her hair and was wearing the dress that she had worn to celebrate her last wedding anniversary.

She smiled from a face that was as radiant as an angel's.

"I told my friends that I was going to go out with my son, and they were impressed, "she said, as she got into the car. "They can't wait to hear about our meeting". We went to a restaurant that, although not elegant, was very nice and cozy. My mother took my arm as if she were the First Lady. After we sat down, I had to read the menu. Half way through the entries, I lifted my eyes and saw Mom sitting there staring at me. A nostalgic smile was on her lips.

"It was I who used to have to read the menu when you were small," she said.

"Then it's time that you relax and let me return the favour," I responded.

During the dinner, we had an agreeable conversation - nothing extraordinary, but catching up on recent events of each other's life. We talked so much that we missed the movie.

As we arrived at her house later, she said, "I'll go out with you again, but only if you let me invite you." I agreed.

"How was your dinner date?" asked my wife when I got home. "Very nice.
Much more so than I could have imagined," I answered.

A few days later, my mother died of a massive heart attack. It happened so suddenly that I did to not get to do anything for her.

Some time later, I received an envelope with a copy of a restaurant receipt from the same place mother and I had dined.

An attached note said: "I paid this bill in advance. I wasn't sure that I could be there; but nevertheless, I paid for two plates - one for you and the other for your wife. You will never know what that night meant for me. I love you, son."

At that moment, I understood the importance of saying in time: "I LOVE YOU!" and to give our loved ones the time that they deserve. Nothing in life is more important than God and your family. Give them the time they
deserve, because these things cannot be put off till "some other time."

<img I kind of used the same title theme here.

I believe in the general good in people. People are simply the same no matter their nationality, color, race, caste, religion, etc. Everybody have in some sort the similar aspirations in life. A simple goal that every one chases nowadays is to lead a peaceful and happy life.

Scientifically speaking, every single person on this earth is made of the same ingredients (cells, tissues, organs, etc). It is the current way of life that has made us more of a machine than a human. The current way of life makes us think just about ourselves and not think about the problems that plague the very existence of our species. Like the video above, all that we lack are examples like the little boy trying to push the tree out of the road. One person cannot be everything. That's simply not possible. But each can set examples to others in their own domain or field of work. By doing something as simple as the little boy did.

I believe in the common good that people have inside them and does not even know that they possess in them. I believe that common good has the capacity to bring about the positive changes to the society. I do not believe in blaming the government for every mess we have in the society. Because the govt is our creation. We only voted (or not voted) them to power. The change has to happen from the bottom-up. We have lots of examples for the forces that spoil the society. Its every where around us. All we lack are the examples like that little boy.

Hitting the Road:Teaching module - Draft 1

Idea generated for schools so far

Teach kids to make their own notebooks.

This unsurprisingly turns out to be a severe limitation to learning. When inquired, the government officials respond,
Cross posted in Overtea and NGOpost

"Even the government has limited resources. To offset our limitations we have empowered the school's headmasters and senior teachers to partner local NGOs and philanthropists to receive the relevant aid".

Makes sense doesn't it? But I think, and the India Sudar member agrees, that this is not a sustainable model. So, what do we have? Even when ills like hunger and child-labor are removed from poor kids' way to the school, the good work is undone by the absence of guaranteed access to something as trivial as notebooks. I think this is a good idea for social entrepreneurship. Notebooks are available everywhere. Can be made from recycled paper too! Making notebooks is a good small-scale business. All it needs is an entrepreneurial idea that takes care of the economics and connects the demand and supply. Are you aware of any already existing models? (not donation of notebooks of course). Do you have any idea yourself?

Amazing Tornado Video!

TORNADO VIDEO FOOTAGE BIG HUGE TORNADOES CLOSE UPS - These bloopers are hilarious

I have never seen anything like this!!! wooooow! Such an assignment came to me through Badri's blog. The assignment is to make a list of 10 things or brands without which life will be harder for me!

The first and the obvious entry in my list is - Tea. Any one who knew me or were around me knows why :) No preference on the brand but very particular about the aroma and flavour. Wish some day I will be on tea tourism!

Next in line will be a nice fit Levi's or Wrangler jeans pant. I can say for sure the odds of finding a ready made jeans pant that fits you perfectly will be quite high.

My computer will definitely be in the list. Dont mistake me to be a tech junkie. But you know its my bread winner!

Even though I dont have it yet but I am sure this will be in my top 10 things to have - a Blackberry Pearl :) You will understand why I am so excited about this phone. I used to have a Nokia 6010 and currently having a Nokia 6030.

Ah I wonder how come this did not strike me as the second most important thing in my life. Its nothing but a delicious chicken dish (any cuisine)!!! :)

Music is definitely part of everyone's life in some form. In mine, its filled with the Maestro's. I am one of the fanatics of this great guy! Imagine driving down on a scenic highway feeling the sunshine on your skin and the wind finding its way through and this man's song to give you company - oooooh my goodness that's like heaven. Apart from that, any instrumental piece that can make me dance even though I am pathetic :D:)

A decent and comfortable sandals or shoes is my next important item given my foot condition - flat foot with thumb angled approximately 45 degrees!

Internet, movies and TV comes at a distant 8th, 9th and 10th.

Finally I made it! Phewwww!!!

Its now my turn to pass on the baton!

Prakash

Life is worth loosing - George Carlin!!!

Very funny and satirical!

<embed style="width:400px; which will have a fresh appeal every time you see it. The fresh appeal is because of the stories that you hear due to war. I get more critical about the movie every time I watch it. The whole movie revolves around a small girl who comes to know on her 9th birthday that she is an adopted child. She also learns that her biological mother is from a small village in Sri Lanka and she gave birth to her in a refugee camp at Rameswaram. One aspect of the movie that makes me feel that it could have been still better is the way the 9 year old girl is portrayed. I felt she was acting way above her age. I certainly could not imagine how a 9 year old girl will perceive the truth about her parents. Especially when it comes to the longing to see her biological mother. Sometimes it made me feel that the 9 year old is portrayed as a girl in her mid-teens.

One of the scene that moved me and also at the same time made me feel "that is an excellent portrayal of the script" is when the writer writes his piece for a magazine about the new born baby and the condition of the refugees. Showing the background scene in black and white and the writer's words in his own hand writing appearing in blue ink - captures the whole emotion of the article. The black and white images slowly becomes frail black figures on the back drop of the glittering waters of the sea.

The climax of the movie where the child finally meets her biological mother along with her adopted parents is packed with emotions. I would say no one in the climax scene would have acted. The performance of each actor in the climax scene at Subramanyam Park, was excellent. Even though the scene is packed with emotions all they had to do was - react to the situation. The only spoiler, in my opinion in that scene, is the music that accompanies in the back ground. I felt like gosh - silence would have punctuated the scene perfectly. Silence would have conveyed to the audience the collective emotions of all the characters in that scene. Silence would have conveyed the pain of both the mothers and the child and others.

If I had the opportunity to decide the ending for this movie, I think I would not have opted for the meeting of the mother and the child. The meeting at the park should have to be arranged but the actual meeting should not have happened. Part of her wants to jump off and run toward her child. But the caring and sacrificing nature of any mother, makes her stand at a distance and see her child. She leaves from there with that indescribable pain. But she gets on with her life with the satisfaction that her child is having a peaceful life. That realization will give her the courage to deal with her guilt and continue with her struggle to ensure peace in the land she was born. It sure will be a disappointment for the child, but with the unconditional love of her adopted parents she would have gotten through just fine. I think this would have been a more realistic ending. The song "Vellai pookal ulagam engum malaravey" would have been more apt to this ending. That song bubbles with hope for a better future, which is what she wants to ensure in that war torn land for many children including hers. What do u think???

But on the whole, the movie is simply GREAT!

The Green Initiative - hmmm???

Nowadays many companies spend a lot of money on portraying a "Green" image to the public - the current customers or potential customers. One day there was an email from my credit card company asking me to switch to electronic statements and also asked to kiss good bye to paper statements! The reason stated in the email - it is their new "green" initiative. If I switch to 'e-statements' the company will plant a tree on my behalf, there by aiming to offset the carbon emitted to the atmosphere by somebody else or by their own office buildings. The email also had a nice digitally enhanced picture of a tree. The bottom line is to reduce their expenses on paper statements - which includes the cost of paper, printing, envelope and mailing charges. But the email puts a "green" cover to all those hidden motives. The credit card company collaborates with some tree planting initiative and they will give money to them to plant the trees. God only knows whether the tree actually gets planted or not. Instead of all these efforts, they can make some real efforts to reduce the energy bill of their multi-storied office complexes. That will be a true effort.

For the sake of argument, lets just say that they in fact gave the money for planting a tree for my simple action of switching to e-statements. Generally, it takes 5-10 years for a tree to grow to a decent size to start consuming some decent amounts of carbon. Just imagine how much carbon would have been emitted during that time. As per Greenfleet it takes about 7-17 trees to offset the amount of carbon emitted by 1 passenger car. Doesn't the marketing campaign by many companies like my credit card company seems to be a blatant lie covering their intended bottom line?!

But I did end up signing to e-statements with a hope that they do give some monetary help to improve the environment.

Are we out of an assembly line?!

Often I wonder why some people fight madly when it comes to the matter of faith or religion or caste or whatever you want to call it. So many things happen simply because of this one reason. If I just consider the events that happened after I started to get a grip on these matters, the apparent fact that stands out is lives of millions of people are ruined. Rwandan massacre, religious and caste based conflicts in India, Middle east problem and the list goes on...

One question for which I do not have the answer yet is this - from which stage in life does a man get that strong bondage with religion or caste? And what makes him feel so proud about it? If we simply take a look back from the day we were born, I wonder at what stage or age does that feeling gets such a strong grip mentally! At birth we do not choose a religion or caste or sect or whatever. We don't even choose our parents. We inherit few things from our parents genetically. Apart from that every child is told by their parents that they belong to a certain sect or religion or caste, when we don't have any idea about what it means to belong to a certain faith or caste. Even our parents were told about it, when they were born. So religion or caste or sect is not a conscious choice made by everyone. That being said, when does one get that intense feel about the faith or religion. Needless to say about a lot of people who do harm to others for that cause. The same argument applies to race or color too.

I am sure that we are not a product out of an assembly line for which the options are chosen by some one. God or the supreme power that holds everything in this universe together does not have an assembly line to churn out various forms of life. He does not have a supply chain to fill in orders - 3 million cat fishes, 400000 trees, 500000 male human babies, 600000 female human babies, 70000 ants and so on... He does not have a manufacturing process in place to classify like this - of the 500000 male human babies 200000 of them are Christians, 100000 of them are Muslims, 60000 Hindus, 50000 Buddhists, etc... And of the 200000 Christian babies 100000 of them are Catholics and the rest Protestants.

Every man at best lives for about 60-70 years on an average. This is a minuscule period when compared to the grand scheme of time. Why couldn't we just live our life and let others live and enjoy?!

I WANNA BE LIKE OSAMA

Excellent and funny musical named "Jihad". But its hard to pick 8 random things in my life!?!?! I tried hard and picked these...

Getting lost in the middle of the night with my classmates in the tea plantations near Ooty on the very first day of our trekking expedition to Mudumalai is definitely one among them. It happened when I was in my 11th standard.

I went directly to a University setting after my high school. Few weeks after joining, took part in the university hostel strike just because we were asked to be a part of it. Not knowing why me and my friends are sitting in the middle of the road in the name of strike is funny when I think about it now. Imagine 6 guys who just completed high school and the rest in the gang being at least 3-5 years elder to us and very large in size too. I was the eldest among the 6 people. Now imagine us sitting in the middle of the road that goes from Madurai to Kambam with people shouting to the hostel authorities and police, in their night dress and some having their toothbrush and tooth paste with them. Add to this setting, few buses and trucks behind us. We were sitting there wondering whether the next place will be a jail or police station!?!? Luckily the strike got over in few hours with our demands accepted (at least for that moment).

I failed in computer science in my high school but ended up learning computers to earn my bread. My friend who wanted to be a computer engineer ended up becoming a Mechanical engineer which I wanted to study. But now I wish I studied economics which I thought to be the most boring subjects of all in my school days.

I watch a lot of movies. Favourites include - The Shawshank redemption, 12 Angry men, Forrest Gump, Rear Window, To kill a mocking bird, Matrix trilogy, all Pixar movies and short films, Ice Age, Mahanadhi, Nayagan, Anbe Sivam, Parasakthi and much more.

Read only one book so far - The Fountainhead. Two books are half way through and another one 75% complete.

Love to go on treks and on adventure trips. If I have enough money would love to set foot on all continents of the world (Landing on airports cannot be counted).

Interesting and yet funny moment was getting caught by the teacher for sleeping during the class. I was sitting in the first row right in front of her. She did not see me sleeping as she was holding the book close to the chest. At the end of the class when she folded the book she found me sleeping. :)) She woke me up and I looked at her half sleep. She was teaching history on a hot summer day!

Another interesting rather difficult moment was when the entire guys population of the computer science department was against me for asking questions in the class conducted by the most beautiful lecturer of the department. The bad part was I was not the one to ask the question that made her cry.

Done! It is really hard to think of things that happened in the past and write it in an way that some one could read! Badri I completed the assignment!

Tagging...

Badri
Prakash I think it will be correct if I say this to be "OpenMusic". Atleast I liked the idea of people collaborating on the web to make nice music. I heard about these music sites through NPR news. Listen to one such remixed song - "Peace and hate" by The Submarines using one such sites www.jamglue.com - by simply clicking on the "Peace & Hate" link. Wanna remix? click on "REMIX"! Have fun and enjoy the music!

I referred to the web for the term "Open Music" and found many hits but these two caught my eyes - http://magnatune.com/info/openmusic and http://openmusic.linuxtag.org/. Its about Kerala's decision to teach Linux in schools instead of Microsoft. I was astonished to the extent people read this simple decision made in a school district in Kerala. I mean its like any decision made in any school district in the US. The article and people who has commented it reflects not only their ignorance about other countries and cultures but also their arrogance (in some). The blog and the comments, reminded me of a line in the movie "The Last of the Mohicans" - "...do not try to make them understand you and do not try to understand them. That is because they are a breed apart and they make no sense...".

The proverb - "The fish would have not gotten into trouble if it has simply shut its mouth" - proves to be true for the author of the blog.

Quality of Engineers?!?!?!

Please dont get misguided by the title. I read a few articles from EE Times and from www.embedded.com. Instead of writing my opinions I thought I will blog the links of the articles and let your opinions flow.

According to me the article gives signals about a more serious issue at hand - our quality of education and the whole system behind it. Our colleges and universities churn out engineers every year. For the colleges, they are after the money rather than the quality. And some have some horrible rules and regulations which will stop the free thinking mind to grow and become a part of the template that college puts forth. The government does not care about any of these.

I would say 'perspective' is the missing piece of the puzzle. We never think education as an investment. Even an uneducated would know that if he/she invest some money in the bank they expect the money to grow and yield some income to them. But when it comes to education we never see it as an investment. Parents see it as a responsibility to get education to their children. What is the return on investment? Students start worrying about their life only when they reach the final year of their education. I wouldn't want to go into every little detail that contributes to this big problem.

Take your time to read these articles and throw in your 2 cents.

The following link is the source article ("State of the Engineer: The young and the restless") that has spawned a chain of responses in EE Times and embedded.com:

http://www.eetimes.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=192202043

Here are two of the responses:-

1. Its be a while since I sat down to write. Well quite a hibernation! Awwwwwwwwwwww... excuse me! One thing that got me during these days was the bombing of the trains in Mumbai and the fight in Lebanon. If I try to look at the situation from the lives of the innocent people who became the victims, I wonder what a life we live. We claim ourselves to be the civilized. But are we? I sometimes feel that earth would be better of in all respects, if one species has not come into being - the humans.

Its very hard to take an ethical stand in a land torn in war and communal riots. But one thing made sense to me was - the butterfly effect. For somebody's business and political interests (The War on Lebanon and the Battle for Oil), innocent people lose their lives and livelyhood. Actions of few people in some part of the world has a huge impact on somebody's life (Israel and Turkey plan energy pipeline). Everything is about money and power. Every company has to keep its share holders happy. Any share holder who buys some stock cannot think about the entire consequences of his small action. He/She is buying stocks to make money so that they can lead a decent life. I am not trying to say that whoever is involved in the business of stocks is responsible for everything thats happening in this world. The power of the money and the greedy nature of the humans is the root cause for most of the mess around the world.

Environmental degradation due to industrialization is another good example of butterfly effect. All these thoughts drove me to one question: What is correct? How can you lead a life without impacting others - not just humans, but any living thing on earth? I guess these subtle impacts is what making life a big challenge?!?!? On the contrary, what if, we do not know what money is??? Will that make this earth a better place??? The most logical answer that we can come up with will be: "we cannot say it conclusively". Its very hard to think in that line of thought as we have become very much dependant on it. But one can say this: "Some problems, if not all, are definitely due to the obsession that some has over money".

Well I got something to write about!?!?!

For long, I've been thinking about what to write in a blog?! Many things have crossed my mind - why not something philosophical or politics or some environmental issues or some personal experience. Once I was very much pushed to write about Condoleezza Rice's explanation for not apologizing to bombing a Pakistani village thinking that some terrorists in their "Most Wanted" list are hiding there. But you know, I did not have access to a computer to write about it Image (I know, I know, its a lame excuse but its the truth). Even now I actually dont have anything specific to write about. So I thought why not write about what exactly went through my mind to start my blogging.

Many things cross my mind when I drive to work or while I drive back home. Often, I have started wondering what purpose do I serve now? Life seem very mechanical and many questions comes along with it. If I start asking the question "Why?" to everything, it leaves me with a lot of questions many making a lot of sense. One of the questions, about which I have been thinking quite often is "Is our mind really capable of doing more?". I guess, right from our birth, we are trained to get the sense of time. Our brain gets into a mechanical rhythm. I wonder what if, we don't know what time is? Many of the words that we know, will not have any sensible meaning. I guess our mind might be working more efficiently than it is right now. When we concentrate on something more seriously then we don't realize the time factor. We infact lose the sense of it. And we dont get the usual fatigue if we concentrate. So I think the control actually lies in our mind. All these years, we are trained to fit to some schedule. Day in and day out, we are into some mechanical routine. I guess thats why some people go to some forrest and start meditating to get a feel for how really it will be to have a life without the sense of time. There are constant reminders about time all around us.

The eyes are a very important input device to our brain. If we shut it off and try to see through our mind we will get this feeling "Oh my God! what a confusion I am???". After a few minutes, you realize, "... you know what, I ain't gonna worry about anything...". That very moment you get a strange sensation yet very relaxing. I would attribute that relaxing sensation to the absense of our constant reminders and the routine. Sometimes, it makes me feel that, I will be able to do all those extravagant stunt shown in the movie Matrix. It infact makes sense to me that if we are not trained about the sense of time or the sense of any physical thing, then our mind would be capable of doing things that we think we are not capable of doing - like jumping some 30-40 yards, for example.

Its a never ending quest - trying to understand why do we need this sense of time and how we came about discovering or inventing it. I guess, whoever thought about this figured that it will help understand the chaos of life, by sticking it to a common reference frame. I guess, the quantification of the never ending axis of time into conceivable packets has made it hard for us to get us out of it!?!?! I getting sleepy. I'll be back with some more of my questions and confusions...
